Pranab Mukherjee thoughts on Rahul Gandhi as PM of India

Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, reveals in her upcoming book, ‘Pranab, My Father – A Daughter Remembers’, that her father had some critical thoughts about Rahul Gandhi’s actions. According to Mukherjee, he considered Rahul’s public rejection of a UPA II ordinance in 2013 as more of a dramatic gesture than a political move, suggesting that politics might not be Rahul’s true calling. Mukherjee also believed that Sonia Gandhi would favor Manmohan Singh over Rahul for the position of Prime Minister due to their close relationship.

In the book, Sharmistha highlights her father’s perspective on Rahul, describing him as “courteous” but “yet to mature politically.” Mukherjee disapproved of Rahul’s decision to disrupt a press conference and vehemently criticize a proposed government ordinance, viewing it as a detrimental act that hurt Congress’ chances in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Despite agreeing with Rahul’s opposition to the ordinance in principle, Mukherjee was dismayed by the way Rahul publicly humiliated the Prime Minister in his absence. According to Sharmistha, Mukherjee questioned Rahul’s authority to challenge a cabinet decision and criticized his actions, saying, “Who does he (Rahul) think he is?” and “What right does he have to humiliate the PM like this?”

Sharmishta also mentions how her father Pranab loves his morning routine and does not want any interference. One fine day, in 2013, he was scheduled to meet Rahul Gandhi at 7.30 PM but Rahul Gandhi mistakenly showed up Rashtrapati Bhavan at 7.30 am. Pranab said if this person cannot state a difference between morning and evening or AM and PM, how will he able to run a country as the Prime Minister.
