Mahua Moitra Expelled From Parliament

Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra has been kicked out of the Lok Sabha (Indian Parliament) because an Ethics Committee looked into accusations that she took bribes for asking critical questions about the government. The charges claimed she received ₹2 crore in cash and fancy gifts from a businessman named Darshan Hiranandani. Moitra was also accused of giving her login details for a secret parliamentary account so Hiranandani could ask questions directly.

Despite denying the bribery charges, she admitted to sharing the login details. After a heated debate and a voice vote, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced her expulsion, stating that the Committee found her behavior immoral and indecent. Earlier, there was a fierce disagreement between the ruling BJP and the opposition when the Ethics Committee’s nearly 500-page report was presented in the House. Moitra’s party, Trinamool, was part of the opposition.

When entering Parliament earlier that day, Moitra, known for being outspoken, made a cryptic statement to reporters about facing challenges. The opposition MPs, including those from Congress and Trinamool, demanded more time to review the report and requested Moitra be allowed to speak. However, the Speaker refused, referring to a similar case in 2005 when 10 MPs, including six from the BJP, were expelled, and their right to speak in the House was revoked after a report was presented.
